Course Syllabus for Microsoft Word 2010

Course Description:

Microsoft IT Academy is designed to teach Microsoft® Office 2010 suite. Students will learn how to use various programs of the office suite in order to prepare for the Microsoft Office Specialist 2010 certification.

 

Microsoft Word 2010 is one of the programs in the Microsoft Office 2010 suite designed for middle school students to help them work toward Microsoft Office Specialist certification. Students will use email to communicate with the teacher and store, use, and manage files with Microsoft Skydrive.

 

Course Goals:

Microsoft® Word 2010 Core teaches the future information worker how to work with different types of documents using a variety of core and intermediate features to create and format business documents such as letters, forms, and newsletters.

 

Course Outcomes:

This course teaches the skills needed to successfully complete the Microsoft Word 2010 exam. Students who complete this course will have reviewed all of the exam objectives and be on their way to preparing for Microsoft Word 2010 Core Exam #77-881.

 

Course Outline:

Lesson 1 Getting Started

Goal: Student will be able to create simple documents and be introduced to some file management tools available in Word.

Outcomes: Upon completion of this lesson, students should be able to identify elements on the screen, use the Quick Access Toolbar, use the Ribbon, work with text, identify screen symbols, move around the document, and use Backstage to save, open, or create new documents, switch between documents, save in different file formats, close a document, add document properties.

 

Lesson 2 Manipulating Text

Goal: Students will be able to create of simple documents and file management tools available in Microsoft Word.

Outcomes:  On completion of this lesson, students should be able to change views, select text, use cut, copy and paste, use the clipboard, move text with drag-and-drop, use Paste Options, use Paste Special, find text or items with Browse by, and replace text or items.

Lesson 3 Formatting Content

Goal: Student will look at the various ways to format a document. Formatting refers to the process of changing the appearance or position of text or objects in a document.

Outcomes: On completion of this lesson, students should be able to format text (bold, italics and underline), change the font, adjust font size and color of text,  adjust the character spacing or position,  adjust text alignment, indent paragraphs, change line and paragraph spacing, and use the Format Painter.

 

Lesson 4 Working with Tabs

Goal: Students will learn what tab stops are and how to use them with lists in documents.

Outcomes: On completion of this lesson, students should be able to understand what a tab stop is, recognize the different types of tab stops, set tab stops on the ruler as well as the Tabs dialog box, set leaders for tab stops, clear one or all tabs, create bulleted or numbered lists, create outline numbered lists, customize lists, work with multi-level lists, and create outlines.

 

Lesson 5 Formatting Documents

Goal: In this lesson, students will look at ways of formatting a document such as changing the margins, paper size, or orientation.

Outcomes: On completion of this lesson, students should be able to  work with document formatting, change the paper size, change the orientation, change the margins, insert page breaks, insert page numbers, insert headers or footers, customize headers or footers,  work with odd/even pages, and apply backgrounds or themes.

 

Lesson 6 Getting Ready to Print

Goal: In this lesson, students will explore different ways to prepare documents for printing, including proofing and previewing the document.

Outcomes: On completion of this lesson, students should be able to check the spelling, check the grammar, check for contextual text errors, use AutoCorrect, add comments for review, preview the document, and print the document.

 

Lesson 7: Using Tables

Goal: In this lesson, students will look at tables and how they can be used to align text in a document. Students will also learn how to format a table and its contents.

Outcomes: On successful completion of this lesson, students should be able to create tables, enter items into tables, adjust rows and columns, merge and split cells, insert and delete cells, rows and columns, format tables, modify table properties

 

Lesson 8: Working with Illustrations

Goal: In this lesson, students will look at the different types of illustrations such as pictures, object shapes, text boxes, and diagrams that can be inserted into a document, as well as what types of modifications or enhancements can be applied to these illustrations.

Outcomes: On successful completion of this lesson, students should be able to insert or modify pictures or Clip Art, insert, modify and enhance text boxes, insert and modify WordArt objects, use screenshots, create, arrange and enhance shapes, create a drop cap, add or remove captions, insert and modify SmartArt diagrams.

 

 

 

Lesson 9: Creating Mass Mailing Documents

Goal: In this lesson, students will look at what merging means in relation to mass mailings – including documents, envelopes and labels.

Outcomes: On successful completion, students should be able to understand what mail merge means, create a main document or form, use a data source, merge documents automatically or manually.

 

Lesson 10: Sharing Documents

Goal: In this lesson, students will be introduced to different ways of sharing documents with others, including building content for use in other documents, handling different versions of a document, and protecting documents.

Outcomes: On successful completion of this lesson, students should be able to use Building Blocks, create and edit Building Blocks, insert Quick Parts items or fields, navigate documents, manage document versions, and protect documents with a password.

 

 

Class Format:

This course will be balanced between theory and practice. Participants may expect to spend all their class time at computers, either learning or practicing and perfecting skills. A typical lesson will include a lecture followed by a demonstration of an application or process useful in the typical classroom. Following each demonstration will be a discussion regarding subject-matter use of the material demonstrated. Participants will follow up by practicing the skill demonstrated and becoming proficient in its use.

 

Policies:

During this course, students will work safely and responsibly. Be effective team members, and be engaged. Students may work as individuals or as a team. While there will be no joint projects allowed, participants are encouraged to collaborate in completing their projects.

 

Course Requirements:

  • Attendance at all meetings
  • Active class participation
  • Passing tests
  • Completion of weekly projects

  • Textbook: CCI Learning Solutions Microsoft Word 2010

 

 

Grading System:

Students will be graded on projects and assignments that they are given in class. Students will also take paper and digital tests based on notes and material taken in class. Class attendance/participation, test, projects and other assignments have equal weight.

 

Students will earn a letter grade of:

A  =  90 – 100%

B  =  80 – 89%

C  =  70 –79%

D  =  60 – 69% and

F  =  Less than 60%.

Course Description:

Microsoft IT Academy is designed to teach Microsoft® Office 2010 suite. Students will learn how to use various programs of the office suite in order to prepare for the Microsoft Office Specialist 2010 certification.

 

Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 is one of the programs in the Microsoft Office 2010 suite designed for middle school students to help them work toward Microsoft Office Specialist certification. Students will use email to communicate with the teacher and store, use, and manage files with Microsoft Skydrive.

 

 

Course Goals:

Microsoft® PowerPoint® 2010 Core teaches the future information worker how to create and manage presentations using a variety of core and intermediate features.

 

 

Course Outcomes:

This course teaches the skills needed to successfully complete the Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 exam. Students who complete this course will have reviewed all of the exam objectives and be on their way to preparing for Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 Core Exam #77-883.

 

 

Course Outline:

Lesson 1 Understanding Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010

Goal: Students will be able to successfully explore and describe the PowerPoint window and to create a new blank presentation. Students will save the presentation, edit the presentation and properly exit the program.

Outcomes: Upon completion of this lesson, students should be able to start Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010, explore the PowerPoint window, create a new blank presentation, navigate a presentation, change text in the Outline/Slides pane, reverse one or more actions, change and add text in the slide pane, change presentation views, and save a presentation.

 

 

 

Lesson 2 Working with Slides

Goal: Students will be able to successfully create a themed presentation as well as make modification to it. Students will insert slides, delete slides and explore the various presentation views in PowerPoint.

Outcomes:  On completion of this lesson, students should be able to create a new presentation from a theme, create a new slide, delete a slide, enter text in the Outline tab, edit text in Normal view, enter speaker notes in the Notes pane and Note Page view, insert slides from other presentations, rearrange slides in Slide Sorter view, and show slides in Slide Show view.

 

Lesson 3 Formatting a Presentation for Printing

Goal: Student will be able to prepare a presentation for printing. Students will create a header and footer, modify the page setup and determine the appropriate print style for the presentation.

Outcomes: On completion of this lesson, students should be able to open an existing presentation, add a header and footer, preview a presentation, change the page setup, choose a printer, and print slides, audience handouts, and speaker notes.

 

Lesson 4 Working with a Presentation Outline

Goal: Students will be able to create a presentation from an existing Microsoft Word Outline as well as create an outline from a presentation. Students will learn to delete slides and text as well as format text in the outline pane. Students will also learn to rearrange slides within the presentation.

Outcomes: On completion of this lesson, students should be able to create a blank presentation, view and enter text in an outline, insert an outline from Microsoft Word, change the view of an outline, select text and delete slides in the outline, rearrange slides, paragraphs, and text, format text in an outline, send an outline or slides to Word, and save a presentation as an outline.

 

Lesson 5 Format the Presentation

Goal: In this lesson, students will learn to format the presentation for impact. Students will learn to modify slides, format text, modify objects, and properly proof the presentation.

Outcomes: On completion of this lesson, students should be able to select and deselect objects, add text to slides, adjust text objects, format text, change text alignment and spacing, move a text object, find and replace text and fonts, correct text while typing, check spelling, and use the Research Task Pane.

 

Lesson 6 Working with Layout and Graphics

Goal: In this lesson, students will be able to to learn to enhance a presentation with graphics. Students will learn to insert and modify clip art, pictures, and WordArt. Students will also learn to insert a table and modify the table.

Outcomes: On completion of this lesson, students should be able to change the layout of a slide, insert an illustration, scale an image, recolor a clip art image, insert and modify a picture, insert and modify WordArt, insert a table in a slide, modify a table, and insert a Textbox in a slide.

 

Lesson 7: Plan a Presentation

Goal: In this lesson, students will learn to customize the presentation with transitions and animations. Sounds clips will also be used to add effect to the presentation in appropriate locations. Students will learn to create a custom slide show from an existing presentation.

Outcomes: On successful completion of this lesson, students should be able to navigate in Slide Show view, set slide transitions, animate slides, insert sound clips, hide a slide, create and edit a custom show, and save a presentation as a slide
